At the moment, when pieces appear/disappear from the jail, the entire collection of pieces shift left/right, which has caused me to play a huge number of wrong piece drops, particularly in a flag race. It would be much better for gameplay if the pieces remained static.

To speed up dropping, here s my suggestion: define keys to select a piece, use the mouseclick to drop it. for example Y for a pawn, X for a knight and so on. As long as you hold the key, the piece is ready to drop....
...you might need some time to get used to this, but once you get it, its probably saving lots of time, because you can use both of your hands. The piece set has to be fixed defined to e.g. YXCVB keys. Its just an option, the actual dropping system should be kept.
I second mastertan's suggestion. Static crazyhouse piece jail has been a standard on other servers for years.

I would love some keyboard shortcuts. Something like this:
* When Z is held down, a click drops a pawn.
* When X is held down, a click drops a knight.
* When C is held down, a click drops a bishop.
* When V is held down, a click drops a rook.
* When B is held down, a click drops a queen.
If you are going to add keyboard shortcuts please make them adjustable.
Some people don't use qwerty you know.
