Android OTB issue

A few weeks ago I noticed that after updating the Android app, for OTB games, I can’t get it to play any variants. You can select them, but it just gives me a standard game. I am seeing this across two different devices.

an additional observation: if you leave the board and then come back, the correct variant is loaded.

I should add, in case it’s helpful, that this was not a problem in previous versions. On my Kindle, I sideload the app, and I am a version or two out of date there. That version behaves as expected.
