Trapping Chess

This is a new variant...which is a variant of Cat Chess..
Ambush chess is the same as normal chess except for one fact: when you do not move you set up a trap on any empty square: if any enemy piece pass through that point the piece is captured. If a king is trapped the other side wins the game. The trap is invisible and can only last one turn.

PS If a knight moves from a1 to c2 it will be captured if b1 c1 or c2 has a trap on.

Another variant is the Multiple Traps Chess which is almost the same as Trapping Chess except for the fact that traps from either side are never removed until it actually traps something.
Sorry, a knight moving from a1 to c2 can be trapped if b1 b2 or c2 has a trap on.
that would stop almost all checks...
just trap a square the piece will go over whilst nabbing your king
and knights move in such a weird way that it's undefined how they move, which squares they go 'over' differs with opinion. for instance, if a knight were on a1 and moved to c2, i could say the knight went over a1 and b2 or b1 and c1, both work, so how could you tell? It's a nice idea, but there are some limitations, knights cant go OVER traps but can land on them, and you cant place while in check. or... the target is captured but the trap, 'recaptures' per say.

overall I think it would work, just gotta work out the chinks.
#3 This is not a set variant so everything is still open..:-)
I consider the knights move in line segments, hence an a1 knight will go to "b1.5" before landing on c2. Hence any trap at b1 b2 and c2 traps the moving knight..

Checks are one of the concerns..without modifying things based on checks I believe it is possible, even likely that the game becomes very drawish.
#4 Not really that much about luck. In this variant direct attacks are highly favored since you can not put a trap on any place that has a piece on it. Long-range and knight attacks are risky since it may be trapped. Moving the king (especially castling) is highly discouraged. If the king is facing a direct attack and only has one space to escape to and can not do anything else this is the same as a checkmate since that location can be trapped when you do move the king.

Setting traps while being checked is not inherently bad though you may be required to get out of check (which is a trappable move) if we still apply the concept of checking and people checkmated will still lose. We may also decide not to even have a checkmate and trapping can stop many checks (but as long as traps only last for one move it should be fine: you often can not trap a double-check into nonexistence)
