Not sure which white opening to use in incoming first USCF tourney

You have given us no appropriate information on which to advise you.
-What section are you playing in
-What is the time control
-What club level experience have you got
-What are your biggest weaknesses as a player so far
I said the game is 40/5. I'm in the open section (other section is U1200). Club level I played for my high school team and also the club in college. Biggest weaknesses are getting attacked when my king has castled and not always looking for other candidate moves
If you don't like the options of black after 2.Nf3 you could also swich the move order to 2. d4 xd4 3. Nf3. But you need to know your stuff after 3 ... Bb4+ . It is a fine opening for white but very complex. Still a interesting way a playing.

"Please note that if you play 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 you should also be ready for the Latvian gambit (can be tricky), and the Elephant gambit, Philidor defense, and ... Petroff defense, and probably more."

Actually, if you want to play the Scotch, you can just play 1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 3. Nf3. This move order pretty much avoids all of black's less common replies to the king's pawn opening. (And if black does play sthg other than 3. ... Nc6, you will still get familiar positions as someone who also plays the Danish Gambit.)
