bad connection = loss why????

Why do we get handed a loss if we have a bad connection? let us finish the game and actually give us a chance.
Because time control is part of the game ; and because your opponent don't have time to wait for your connection problems to be solved ?
pepoy, even if you are in the opening of a 10min game, if you get one packet lost, lichess can't recover from it and gives your opponent the option to declare himself the winner. Happened to me a couple of times. I could open other pages on lichess itself, but my move would not be relayed. And I can only refresh the game page if I confirm that I want to "leave" the game. It is stupid.
@Gerurururu : I have lost several games due to bad connection issues, I know it's frustating, but when I play online, I have to make sure I really can play. If my opponent see that I might have left the game, he has no way to know if this disconnection is temporary or not. Why should lichess force him to stay and wait?
For now lichess proposes to claim a victory or a draw ; if we would have to cancel every game because of a disconnection, it would be unfair to players whose opponents have really left the game, those who resign by just disconnecting.
Why not? When you start a 10 minute game you are basically agreeing to a game that both your opponent and yourself have 10 minutes to complete all their moves. Why should it matter if you disconnected for like 9 minutes as long as you are able to finish the rest of your moves in 1 minute.

If the purpose of this is to stop poor sports from disconnecting instead of resigning in a lost position because they want to waste their opponents time this accomplishes nothing because a poor sport that is savvy enough will just not disconnect and run their clock that way.

So in my eyes the only real way this makes sense is if there is reasonable expectation that someone who disconnected won't be coming back to the game. But I seriously doubt you can expect that because most people care about their rating/winning especially as you climb up the rating ladder and will be trying desperately anything to get their connection back whether that requires restarting the router or what not.
Absolutely... I completely agree with p-wnattack. I have lost a HELL LOT of games owing to bad internet connection. And the worst part is that, EVEN IF you return within the time YOU have for YOUR OWN moves, you just end up seeing, "White left the game, Black is victorious" or the other way round... It is indeed very irritating.

However, if this is the rule, I am also ready for it. In fact, my best win till date is against a 2214 rated opponent, and the game lasted for only 6 moves !!! The player most probably had connection issues, and I was given the chance to declare myself the winner.

I hate to win like this... But this is how things are....
I agree this really needs to be fixed! In chess.com you have at least a few minutes to reconnect, why doesn't lichess allow someone to reconnect? if you have 1 minute or 10 minutes you have the right to use your time!
This is very unuserfriendly for people or countries with a bad internet connection.

Last time my opponent disconnected I waited for his time to run out but if lichess wants people to abuse this option of claiming a win I will do so in the future, this is sad for chess.
This isn't at all my decision; however, I have suggested that for games with longer time controls the disconnect duration be increased.
Fellow Lichess players! I hear many of you bemoan a flaw on lichess: the 'claim victory' button which magically appears when an opponent disconnects for a fraction of a second!
Do not be fooled by the leprechaun! Do not click it! If you want a feature which adds a 30second or 1 minute buffer, be so kind to allow this to you opponents. If everyone exploits this feature, then there is no reason to change it. Plus, everyone gets upset over it.

There is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. You will not become a better chess player by clicking that button. You will not enjoy the game more by clicking that button. (Actually there is no game once you click that button;) So someone won a few rating points from your misfortune. Well, don't cry over soggy lucky charms!
Yes, I have lost unfairly too:

Now go forth and play chess, ye treasure hunters. And may yer chess wishes come true!
