Bug with Lost on time and insufficient material?

Hi,

I think there is a glitch with the game result if a player loses on time and only little material is left. This case is propably rare but see this game:
http://de.lichess.org/bbYl18VP/black#84

Black moved and White lost on time. It was declared as a draw. According to my understanding of FIDE rules, only if there is no chance to win the game is drawn. Here, Black can mate White.

Black mates with the following moves:

[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "????.??.??"]
[Round "?"]
[White "?"]
[Black "?"]
[Result "*"]
[FEN "8/8/3n1PR1/1k6/8/8/5P2/6K1 w - - 0 43"]
[SetUp "1"]

43. Kh1 Kc4 44. Rg1 Kd4 45. f7 Ke4 46. f8=N Kf3 47. Ng6 Ke2 48. Nh4 Ne4 49.
Nf3 Kd3 50. Nh2 Ke2 51. f4 Kf2 52. f5 Nd2 53. f6 Ne4 54. f7 Nd2 55. f8=N Ne4
56. Ne6 Nd2 57. Nf4 Ne4 58. Ng2 Ng3# *
There is no *forced* win with king and knight - the opponent would have to deliberately checkmate him/herself, which won't happen, therefore it is drawn
and there is a faster way...

1. f7 - Kc4
2. f8=B - Kd3
3. Kh1 - Ke2
4. Rg1 - Ne4
5. Bd6 - Kf3
6. Bh2 - Nxf2#

Hi,

Of course no one would play this stupid. But it's a technical question.

FIDE rule www.fide.com/FIDE/handbook/LawsOfChess.pdf :

6.9:
...
However, the game is drawn, if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the player’s king by any possible series of legal moves.

Mate in 6. :-) Thx.
"technical question" You stated this. which makes no sense as you already discorvered the answer
